That's a great article with a lot of suggestions. I'm interested in hearing more about using places like Yelp and UrbanSpoon, (namely review sites).

Should restaurants incentivize these reviews, or just make a suggestion to their guests.

I completely aggee on yur article. Like it or not Social Media Marketing is here to stay. Why not use it to your business advantage?

Twitter gives the business the ability to reach broad consumer base on the internet, and it costs nothing to directly market to them!

We at Sterizon, provide a Wi-Fi device for restaurants tto get customers to follow your business on Twitter instantly using Sterizon wiZit device.

I agree on your article 100%.As a prior restauranteur, restaurants could really benefit from social media because all restaurants are social establishments and it's more cost effective to increase sales during tough economic times. However, I think restaurants still need to some traditional marketing initiatives encourage guests to sign on twitter! For example, table tents saying"follow us twitter" or mentioning it on the menu. You will be surprise how many restaurant don't do the little things.

One other question: I notice you didn't mention facebook? Also what do you think about weekly e-campaigns?

Andy,

My first advice for clients, mainly restaurants is to have an optimized mobile version of their site. Beyond that, second priority most definitely is to be listed and found on all the major review sites, Yelp, UrbanSpoon and Trip Advisor. iPhone app would be third, but as both know financially it's not for every restaurant. For the major brands it's is a necessity though. Mobile Marketing via SMS text messaging is another method, but it's not something I personally recommend.

You nailed with it Google Maps/Local search. I think that takes more precedent than anything else. I was not even thinking in SEO terms, but that's a great point, and one that I should of included in this post!

Thanks,

Mike

Mike - you and I seem to always be on the same wavelength. I've been working with a couple of restaurant clients on web strategies - obviously with social media involvement.

We covered a lot of what you mentioned here but you did give me a few more ideas!

On the mobile front - what do you recommend for restaurants who don't have a need for their own "iphone app"... We recommend being on Google Local/Maps listings - as well as Yelp. But beyond basic listings what are some other mobile strategies for restaurants?

Great post !

Good post! One important thing about building an audience (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) of fans is that when your restaurant does get a negative review, many times your fans will step up and counter the bad review. This adds more credibility because they are doing it independently.
